How to Create and Manage Custom Keyword Tags

Learn how to create and apply color-coded tags to organize tracked keywords and filter your Rank Tracker by keyword groups.

Custom Keyword Tags in Keyword Ranking help you organize tracked keywords into meaningful groups using color-coded tags. This makes it easier to prioritize keywords, filter your Rank Tracker, and monitor ranking movements across specific themes.

Tags are created at the account level, so you can reuse them across your tracked keywords. Each tag includes a name and color, with an optional description to provide additional context.

Why use custom keyword tags?

  • Organize keywords by theme: Group keywords based on product launches, campaigns, search intent, or other categories relevant to your strategy.
  • Prioritize important keywords: Quickly identify the keywords you want to monitor more closely.
  • Simplify rank tracking: Filter your Rank Tracker to display only keywords assigned to selected tags.
  • Monitor performance by group: Review ranking movements across a specific keyword theme without manually searching through your entire list.

[drawer]How to Create Custom Tags

Before assigning tags to your keywords, you'll need to create them.

  1. Open Keyword Ranking and locate the Rank Tracker.
  2. Find any keyword and click + Tag in its Tags column.
  3. In the popover, select the Create tag tab.
  4. Enter the required details:
    • Tag name: Enter a descriptive name for your tag.
    • Color: Choose a color to make the tag easier to identify.
    • Description (optional): Add a short explanation of what the tag represents. This appears when you hover over the tag.
  5. Save your new tag.

Your tag is now available to assign to other tracked keywords within your account.

[drawer]How to Apply Tags to Keywords

Once you've created your tags, you can assign them to individual keywords.

  1. In the Rank Tracker, find the keyword you want to organize.
  2. Click + Tag in the keyword's Tags column.
  3. In the popover, check the tags you want to assign.
  4. Uncheck any tags you want to remove.
  5. Click Save to apply your changes.

Good to know: You can assign multiple tags to a single keyword. Changes won't take effect until you click Save, so you can select or remove multiple tags before confirming.

[drawer]How to Filter Keywords by Tags

After organizing your keywords, use the tag filter to focus on specific groups.

  1. Locate the Tags column header in the Rank Tracker.
  2. Click the filter icon.
  3. Select one or more tags you want to display.
  4. Click Apply filter.

The Rank Tracker will now show only keywords assigned to your selected tags.

This is especially useful when you want to review a specific campaign or keyword group without scrolling through your entire tracked keyword list.

[drawer]Example Use Case: Organizing Keywords for a Product Launch

Imagine you're launching a new product and want to monitor how it ranks for different types of search terms.

Instead of managing all your tracked keywords as one long list, you can create tags based on your launch strategy.

For example:

Tag Purpose
Product Launch Keywords you're monitoring specifically for the launch
High Priority Important keywords that need closer attention
Competitor Terms Keywords related to competing products or brands
Long-Tail Keywords Specific search phrases you're targeting

You can assign multiple tags to a keyword. For example, a high-value long-tail keyword can have both High Priority and Long-Tail Keywords tags.

When reviewing performance, filter by Product Launch to see all relevant keywords together. You can then review their ranking movements and identify which search terms are gaining or losing visibility.

As your campaign progresses, you can update keyword tags to reflect changing priorities.

[drawer]Managing and Deleting Tags

You can manage keyword groupings by adding or removing tags from individual keywords.

If a tag is no longer needed, you can delete it from the tag popover.

Before deleting, Scale Insights will display a warning showing how many keywords currently have that tag assigned.

Important: Deleting a tag removes it from every keyword it's currently assigned to. This action cannot be undone. Review the affected keywords before confirming deletion.

[drawer]Limitations and Important Notes

  • Account-level tags: Tags are created at the account level and can be reused across tracked keywords.
  • Maximum of 50 tags: Each account can have up to 50 custom tags.
  • Multiple tags per keyword: A keyword can have more than one tag assigned.
  • Manual assignment: Tags must be created and assigned to keywords manually.
  • Deletion is permanent: Deleting a tag removes it from all associated keywords and cannot be undone.
  • Saving is required: Changes to keyword tag assignments only take effect after clicking Save.
